Counseling as a role of church
A dynamic church operates in several capacities, the most vital being Biblical teaching and spiritual growth. But there are many other roles which a healthy church should engage in. Evangelism, works of service, and coming alongside those who are hurting are all important components of church life.
Ephesians 4:11- 13 states “It was He who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” God has given each one of us unique talents and abilities. Every role in the church is very important to build up the body of Christ.
Biblical counseling comes from the perspective that people are complex creations and represent more than just the problems that they are currently facing. God has given gifts to His people and everyone has something to contribute. To be effective in their roles as helpers, they need to be strong spiritual leaders, who are willing to learn specific pastoral care skills so that they can offer insightful, Christ-centered care.
It is important for the church body to focus on wellness for the individual and not only on spiritual growth. Memorizing Bible verses and church attendance is often not enough to help those struggling with life issues. People need listening and sympathetic ears to help them wade through their hurt and battered feelings.
The Christian side of Ma33a.com is centered on the wellness model, which encompasses the entire person, spiritually, emotionally, physically, mentally and socially. It is important that all aspects of the individual are addressed, not only speaking to just one facet or another of a person’s being. The goal is to achieve wholeness for the entire person, thus realizing God’s desire for His children.
Biblical counseling works on issues of the heart, relying on the Word of God to shape us into the person He has created us to be. Seeking God’s will helps clarify where work needs to progress and what issues to focus on. With reliance upon the Holy Spirit, helpers can give much needed care, while using their acquired skills and abilities.
